United Oilfield Services is supporting the “European Shale Gas Regulation and Supply Chain Summit”, which is in turn officially supported by the UK and Polish Governments, on 12th May in London. The summit focuses on two of the main issues that will determine whether the shale gas industry is able to realise its potential in the UK and Poland. The first of these is the regulatory environment, which needs to strike the right balance between environmental protection and providing sufficient incentives for the industry to make the required investment, while the second is ensuring that there is an effective supply chain in place to support the industry’s development.
Michael Fallon, the UK Energy Minister, and Katarzyna Kacperczyk, Undersecretary of State in the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will represent, respectively, the UK and Polish Governments, at the summit.
Their comments on the summit are given below:
“Shale gas has the potential to have a significant impact on Europe’s competitiveness. The regulatory and policy environment in which the industry develops is therefore critical and I welcome this summit as a useful forum in which the key issues can be discussed.”
Michael Fallon, Energy Minister, UK
“At a time when EU policy on shale gas is beginning to take shape, this important summit will provide all those involved in the EU shale gas industry with a timely opportunity to hear how the countries most involved are approaching its regulation and how the EU’s plans may impact the industry.”
Katarzyna Kacperczyk, Undersecretary of State, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Poland
The summit will bring together UK and Polish Government ministers with representatives from the industry to discuss how the industry in Europe should be regulated and the policies that are emerging at both the national and EU Commission level. It will also provide a forum for discussion about how the industry can establish a viable supply chain that is capable of supporting the potential scale of the European shale gas industry.
